21.04.2023

We’ve had a brilliant start to Summer term. On Monday we trialled our first “it’s good to be back” wellbeing day. The idea for the day came from the KS2 children after we discussed what would make coming back to school after a holiday less worrying.
The day started with children being able to sit with friends to chat and catch up. We then took part in a whole school mile, where staff and adults were able to use our amazing outdoor environment to exercise and enjoy the fresh air whilst chatting / catching up. Our assembly focused on this terms value of forgiveness and the wellbeing theme of resilience. The children then took part in a range of resilience building activities.
The feedback from the children was 100% positive and we are hopeful that they have discussed the activities at home and it will help children feel more positive about the next return to school after a holiday.  The children have suggested ways we could further improve the day, that we will consider when planning the next one.

What I enjoyed about our “it’s good to be back “day:

Catching up with friends

Tent building / working as a team

Building card towers

I felt great when I achieved something (building cards/ tent building)

It was fun and relaxing

I enjoyed walking and catching up

It felt more welcoming than straight back into normal lessons

The chance to talk with my friends who I’d not seen over the holidays

It felt nice and calm

It was lovely to welcome parents and family of children in Whernside on Monday afternoon to join our celebration assembly. Children proudly showed off work they had been doing at the end of last term. Our next celebration assembly is on Monday 15th May, for all house teams, and we will be joined by Sarah Baines, who will be talking to children about our ‘Walk The World’ campaign.

On Thursday, we welcomed Freya to our nursery class, we are certain Freya will be very happy here at Leck after a very settled first session.

Cluster Football at Arkholme – our junior children have been invited to take part in a football tournament at Arkholme on Tuesday. There will be an upper junior and a lower junior team. A full information sheet is attached for children taking part.

Eco-Club – Snack & Drink… will continue on a Tuesday. This week children enjoyed banana milkshake and muffins.
Any children wishing to join in should bring in £3.75 in a named envelope on Monday to cover to the end of May.

Strike Action – as we are sure you’re all aware, teaching staff nationally have been taking strike action.
The next strike day is planned for this coming Thursday.
On this occasion, some staff have informed me that they will be taking strike action.
Because of this, school will open for the morning and then be closed from 12.00noon on Thursday.
Strike action is also planned for Tuesday 2nd May – teachers WILL NOT be striking on this occasion.

School Value – our value for this half-term is “forgiveness”. Assemblies and class worship will be focused on this value and children in school who show forgiveness will be celebrated. Our school value changes every half-term.

Y1 & Y2 Maths Homework – please could all Y1 and Y2 parents check in their child’s folders.
Most Y1 children have new fact to be learning, after a test at the end of last term. Please keep these facts in the folder.
Y2 children have some questions to answer. A letter is enclosed explaining the homework. Please can Y2 maths homework be returned to school on a Wednesday ready for new homework to be set on the Friday. Thank you.

RE – please can all Reception children bring in a photograph of a place special to them on Wednesday 26th April for our RE work on “special places”. It could be a favourite holiday, a den in the garden or a place they have visited, so long as they can talk about why it is special. Thank you.

PE Kit – please can all children in school return their PE kit. As we are now in the summer months, we will be outside for our PE lessons, so please bring appropriate clothing and footwear (trainers or pumps). Thank you.

After School Club – unfortunately, due to little uptake, Mrs Mather’s after school eco club has been cancelled. All children will be given the opportunity to get involved with eco club activities on a Tuesday lunchtime instead, if they wish. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Infants Outdoor Education Day – all our infant children will be taking part in an outdoor education day at Borwick Hall Education Centre on Tuesday 2nd May – a full information sheet will follow next week.

Coronation Lunch – all children have had a special coronation lunch ordered for Friday 5th May, if you DO NOT want your child/ren to have a lunch in school, please email me to OPT OUT.  Payment will be available on our SchoolMoney online platform.

Infants Journeys Trip – Mrs Mather has planned a very exciting journeys trip for all infants on Tuesday 9th May. This will involve a bus ride, a train ride and lots of walking. We will also be having a tour of the Heritage Centre at Carnforth Railway Station. A full information sheet will follow. Payment of £10.00 per child will be made available on SchoolMoney.

Just For Fun April Art Challenge – Mrs Tidd has organised April’s just for fun art activity. Children are being encouraged to use their photography skills to take a beautiful photo of something from nature. Children are being asked to bring their chosen photograph into school by Wednesday 26th April. Thank you.
