10th May 2019
This week has been another relatively quiet week in school, as the Y6s prepare for their SATs. The children have been working very hard preparing for ‘the big week’ and we know they will do their absolute best. We are encouraging these pupils not to worry about the week, but make sure they have good nights’ sleep this weekend to help them feel ready for Monday.
Infants – next week all infants will be doing various outdoor activities so will need appropriate clothing for the weather each day please (coat, hat, sun cream – the weather is looking favourable at the moment – we’ll keep our fingers crossed!)
PTFA Meeting – the PTFA met on Tuesday and discussed fundraising ideas for the term ahead.
The jumble sale was discussed – a poster is enclosed in this week’s bag – if you can share the event with friends and family that would be great, please pop into the office if you would like any more copies. Next week a list of helper slots will be going up – please ensure you sign up if you can help – these events cannot happen without enough volunteers.
Kwik Cricket Competition – our Y6 children will be taking part in a Kwik Cricket competition at Over Kellet Primary School on Friday 17th May. A full information sheet is enclosed for those taking part. Children will need to arrive at school ready to set off at 8.50am, all children will need a packed lunch. Thank you.
Y6 Research – our Y6 children have been approached to take part in a research opportunity by Johanna Doerr – there is a letter enclosed, please read through and return consent to school if you wish your child to take part. Johanna will be in school on Thursday 6th June.
Height & Weight Check – children in Y6 and Reception will be taking part in this year’s national measurement programme. For parents of those children involved, there is a full information leaflet enclosed in this week’s Friday bag.
Y3, 4 & 6 – Lancashire County Council’s Safe and Healthy Travel Team have provided us with activity books to encourage Safe and Active Travel in Lancashire. “The Journey” is for children in Y3, “Steppin’ Out” for children in Y4 and “Way 2 Go” is for Y6 pupils.
Welfare Assistant – we are still looking for a welfare assistant. We need someone to help serve meals and supervise the children during their midday break. The vacancy is term time only covering Wednesday, Thursday & Friday from 11.45am – 1.15pm. Please contact the office for more details.
Governors – we are actively seeking new governors to join our board – do you know anyone? Ideally, we are looking for non-parental governors, to compliment and work alongside the board we currently have. If you know anyone who may be interested in joining the board, please speak to Stuart Hemingway, either by phone 07706 143 380 or email stuarthemingway@btinternet.com
Thank you.

- Jumble sale
A jumble sale is planned for 22 June, 10-12noon, at Fraser Hall, Cowan Bridge.
Clare is producing a poster to promote the event. This can be copied and distributed in Friday bags and used on notice boards. It can also be reduced in size and used as a flyer. Cowan Bridge Stores will have the flyers on their shop counter and put copies in the local paper. Amanda will speak to Mrs Knapp about putting on the school’s FB page. Laminated posters on stakes to be put in grass verges around Cowan Bridge 2 weeks before event. Viki to check if we have stakes in the school shed.
Amanda will email Keith Hyde about having access to the hall the night before to set up.
Entrance to the jumble sale will be £1 to include a drink and a biscuit. Further cakes, traybakes and scones will be on sale. Children’s drinks will also be on sale (plenty of squash and plastic cups already in stock). We will ask for donations of cakes, traybakes, scones, milk etc.
There will be a raffle on the door. We will ask for pamper hamper donations from parents/carers at the next PTFA mufti day, first Friday after ½ term, 7 June. Pamper hamper will include toiletries, beauty products etc. It was decided not to run a tombola stall.
Bag2school collection is booked for Tuesday 25 June, so any clothing items left over can be sent off. Other items left over will be sent to charity shops or the tip.
We will need plenty of help on the day – 4 people running refreshments from the kitchen, 2 people on raffle/entrance, 6 people behind tables selling. Viki will create a rota.
- School activities requiring PTFA funding/input
- 3 x recycled plastic picnic benches, in school colours, have been bought by school at £949. The PTFA has agreed to fund this purchase. Rachel to provide school with a cheque.
- Junior class newspaper – around £40 – PTFA agreed to fund this.
- Year 6 end of year do – details to be decided.
- School wristbands – around £40 – Viki to confirm costs. Also ask parents if they have any at home, they sometimes end up going home after a trip.
- Swimming gala/Sports day – provide ice-pops.
- Future fundraising ideas
Viki raised the idea of a promise auction to raise money specifically for a permanent canopy for the infant courtyard – the cost from an initial quotation is in the region of £3,500. Any parents that have been involved in a promise auction before, or have any ideas – we need your HELP! The idea is to hold an event in November. Tickets to be sold to include food, eg hog roast or hotpot, possible entertainment, band? Either bring own drinks or bar provided depending on venue. Possible venues – village hall, rugby club, whoop hall.
- Account balance – £1,899.72
