We’ve had a busy week in school, the infant children had a busy Forest School session filling our new vegetable patches ready for planting, followed by an afternoon of shelter building in the woods.
We had a busy Walk 2 School on Tuesday, with 14 children taking part and enjoying breakfast together on arrival. Our next Walk 2 School will be Tuesday 1st March. Our footballers all did us proud at the Football Tournament at Arkholme, playing well together as a team and behaving exceptionally.
On Wednesday, our junior children had a wonderful time on their visit to the Maritime Museum, it really enhanced their learning and brought the topic to life. If any families would like to follow the Slave Trade Trail around Lancaster over half term, the juniors will be bringing a trail map home next week.
COVID-19 – we would like to thank all parents for their support during our outbreak of Covid, we do seem to have managed to get on top of this outbreak relatively quickly with your help.
Covid in the community is still high so we are still encouraging the use of lateral flow tests on your children if they display any symptoms, including mild cold symptoms.
1-Minute Maths – White Rose Maths have released a free app for KS1 children to enjoy. We will be using this in school but it would be great for children to practice at home too.
Jess Butterworth – Tuesday 8th February via Zoom – Jess Butterworth, author of Running on the Roof of the World and When the Mountains Roared, will be joining the Y5 & Y6 children virtually for an interactive session. The children will have an opportunity to ask questions. Our Y5 children are currently reading her stories so we are all very excited.
Life Education Visit – once again, the Life Education team will be visiting school next Wednesday. There won’t be a parent session this time, but parents are more than welcome to speak to Katy in the playground from 8.50am to hear more about the programme. Children, if they wish, will be able to buy bendy pencils on the bus for £1.00.
PTFA Mufti-Day – children are welcome to come to school in their own clothes next Friday in return for a £1.00 donation to the PTFA.
Book Sale – the junior library will be holding a sale of its surplus books at the end of the school day on Friday. Children can bring money into school to buy the books, priced at 20-50p. All money raised will go towards buying new books and resources for the library. The children are absolutely loving our newly stocked library (all thanks to the PTFA) so we are sure they will enjoy being able to buy some of the old books to take home.
There will also be some maths workbooks available to take home if any parent or child would like one. These are old stock that do not follow our current program of work in maths, but are still really useful and relevant for practice at home.
REMINDER: WOW Walk To School – Mrs Mather has signed school up to the Living Streets Walk To School where children are encouraged and rewarded for walking to school at least once per week. This can be walking from home, if you live close enough, or park and stride which would be more appropriate for our location. Children will be encouraged to park at Cowan Bridge Village Stores and walk up to school with their parents.

REMINDER: Upper Junior Caving Day – our year 5 & 6 children will be experiencing an introduction to caving on Tuesday 22nd February. Experienced instructors from Tower Wood Outdoor Centre will lead, along with Mr Stafford-Roberts. This will take place at a cave in the Yorkshire Dales chosen by the instructors, dependant on the weather. A visit information sheet is attached. Please come and see Mr Stafford-Roberts if you have any queries or concerns.
Eco / Gardening Club – following the half term break, Mrs Mather will be running an after-school Gardening Club on Tuesday from 3.15-4.15pm starting Tuesday 22nd February. If your child/ren would like to attend, please let the office know via email. Payment of £12.00 should be made before half-term so we are able to purchase seeds, vegetables, compost etc. ready for our first session. Please send money in a named envelope. Thank you.
Junior Rugby Club – following the half term break, Scott from Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club will be running an after-school Rugby Club on Thursday from 3.15-4.15pm starting on Thursday 24th February. Payment of £10 towards the cost of the club will be made available on SchoolMoney for anyone who would like to attend.
Bikeability Training – all of our Y5 & 6 pupils will be undertaking Bikeability training on 3rd & 4th March. You will find a letter enclosed regarding the training, an ‘M’ checklist to ensure your child’s bike is roadworthy and a consent form.
Please can you sign and return the consent form to enable your child to take part, thank you.
